Wires vs. Cables: What’s the Difference?

Wires and cables serve the same general purpose: to conduct electricity. But the difference lies in their structure. A wire is a single conductor, typically made of copper or aluminum. In contrast, a cable is made up of multiple wires bundled together, usually covered with layers of insulation and protective sheaths to ensure durability and safety in more demanding environments.

What Are Wires and Cables Made Of?

There are three main components of most cables:

Conductor

This is the core part that carries the electrical current. Copper is widely used for its excellent conductivity and reliability, while aluminum is sometimes used in larger-scale industrial applications due to its lighter weight and lower cost.

Insulation Layer

Surrounding the conductor, this layer prevents electricity from leaking out. Common insulation materials include PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene), both known for their durability.

Sheath

This is the outer protective layer that shields the cable from external physical damage, moisture, or chemicals, ensuring it performs well in tough conditions.
